Positano
Today was a beach day! We took the bus from Sorrento down the winding road crazy cliff-side road to Positano. Riding on that road was definitely an experience in and of itself. I am just glad I wasn’t driving! The kids liked the bus ride, but sitting in the way back of the bus made Ronin and Willow a little queasy. We got dropped off at the top of Positano, and the beach was all the way at the bottom. So down the steps we went. I was really not looking forward to the trip back up, but the view was fabulous. The kids even saw a cat home and spent time watching the five cats there.
When we finally got to the beach we made sure to put on plenty of sunscreen. It was so hot; it has been in the high 90’s and in the 100’s this week (and supposed to be the same next week too). The water was nice and cold, but the sand was scorching. We also didn’t have an umbrella, so had no shade. I reapplied sunscreen so many times and am so thankful that no one got burned. The upper part of the beach was sandy, but the water was all rocks. It definitely was not too comfortable on our feet, but the kids didn’t mind. They just didn’t really like the saltwater getting in their eyes and mouth. The best part was collecting sea glass. We found lots of green and white sea glass and collected several pieces to bring home. Our kids were in swim bottoms, shorts, and t shirts, while on the beach we saw lots of bare breasts, thongs, and tiny male swimsuits.
We were in the water for over three hours, which is probably a record for these kids and the beach. If you know Willow, she doesn’t like the sand, dirt, or water. So for her to get in the ocean and have a blast was huge! We brushed off the rocks and sand the best we could and then grabbed some sandwiches from a place close to the beach. I asked the guy at the restaurant for the closest bus stop back to Sorrento, and he took us to a different one than the one we had taken to get down to the beach. I was skeptical, but decided to follow his advice. Boy was I glad I did! Although we went down a million steps to get to the beach, the way up was mostly a gentle uphill slope and not too many steps. It was also the first stop in Positano going back toward Sorrento, so we were able to get seats on the bus. Both Ronin and Willow fell asleep almost immediately and slept the whole drive back. And believe me, the drive back was just as scary as the drive there!
